Intangible Assets and Financial Performance of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria: The Moderating Effect of Ownership Structure

Barisua Akpeekon

Abstract

The study examined the effect of intangible assets on the financial performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria, and the moderating effect of ownership structure on the relationship. Data was collected from the annual reports of five listed commercial banks over a period of six years (2012-2017). Intangible asset was proxied by goodwill, while financial performance was measured using return on assets. The study used the ex-post facto research design, and conducted regression analyses to test two hypotheses raised for the study. Findings showed that intangible assets have a negative and significant effect on profitability, but managerial ownership had an insignificant moderating effect on the relationship between intangible assets and firm performance.
